Solomon Liang Play Korngold with Holland Symphony

Alumnus Solomon Liang performed the Korngold Violin Concerto with the Holland Symphony (Michigan) to open their Classics Season this past weekend.

This past summer, Solomon attended Itzhak Perlman’s Chamber Music Workshop, and served as Faculty String Quartet in Residence for Interlochen Summer Arts Camp with the Judson String Quartet. An advocate of community outreach, he has presented 22 outreach performances as the Quartet in Residence for Banff’s 11th International String Quartet Competition, and brought educational performances to public schools in Northeast Ohio through Sykora Educational Scholarship Fund.

David Garrett Performs Across US

David Garrett, when not playing at the Hollywood Bowl, took part in the Sound Encounters Music Camp, National Cello Institute, and the Grand Tetons Music Festival. Summer solo and chamber music performances included concerts in Los Angeles, Claremont, Pasadena, Algoura Hills, Santa Monica, Ottawa (KS), and Teton Village (WY). This Tuesday’s broadcast of Performance Today includes the Zemlinsky Trio from the Grand Tetons Music Festival with Garrett as cellist.

Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California Celebrates 25th

The Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California is managed by alumna Chika Emori Wie (BM performance 2009). Over 140 students and teachers are include in the program including several of our students and alumni: Minna Im, cello; Melisandra Teteris, French Horn; Adrian Dunker, French Horn; Gabrielle Cross, French Horn; John Cross, Trumpet; and Andrew Rodman, Trumpet. They recently performed their 25th anniversary concert at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

David Garrett in Concert

David Garrett performed the Brahms Trio, Op. 114 and the Smetana String Quartet No. 1 on the Philharmonic’s recent chamber music program.

Garrett also performed at the Laszlo Varga memorial service at San Francisco State University. Varga, Principal Cellist of the NY Philharmonic under Mitropolous and Bernstein and long-time professor at SFSU, was Garrett’s teacher.

Holly Bishop Funds Afghan Orphanage Sponsorship

Holly Bishop established a Afghan Child Education and Care Organization (AFCECO) orphanage sponsorship for three young Afghan musicians: violinist Sunbol (basic needs), cellist Nazira (housing), and oboist Madina (healthcare). She and her husband raised the fund through their ensemble, Cuatro Puntos, a group of chamber musicians dedicated to global cooperation and peace through the writing and performance of new music worldwide. They are also sponsoring a violin program in Kabul.

Benton-Thomas Preciado at United Negro College Masked Ball

Benton-Thomas Preciado performed at the United Negro College Fund Mayor’s Masked Ball hosted by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel.

The Ball is one of the Los Angeles’ signature fundraising gala and premier social events of the year. UNCF recognizes the extraordinary work of corporations and individual who have made significant contributions to UNCF’s work to improve the educational outcomes of African American and other minority students who deserve a quality, affordable college education.
