Jeffe Huls Featured in Big Voice

Alumus Jeffe Huls (BM, Choral Music Education) is featured in “Big Voice”, a documentary on his extraordinary choral program at Santa Monica High School. Check out the trailer.

The film was selected for the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival and will receive its first showing at Samohi on May 7.

 

 

 

 

 

Whiplash Nominated for Best Picture

Little did we know that when Jazz Studies was contacted by a Hollywood casting agency in the summer of 2013 to hire extras for a feature film about college jazz bands that “Whiplash” would go on to be nominated for an Oscar as Best Picture.

Drew Ninmer, Jason Fabus, Taylor Smith, Patrick Lenertz, and Gary Soland appeared and are credited as members of the conservatory jazz orchestra in the film, which focuses on a drummer in as he struggles to impress a merciless teacher. “Whiplash” received a total of five Oscar nominations; J.K. Simmons, who won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the teacher, is nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

Marianthe Bezzerides in Film Scoring Mentorship

Marianthe Bezzerides was one of nine accepted into the 2014 Composing for the Screen Film Scoring Mentorship Program in NYC. Each composer receives a recording session with some of the top string players in New York and attend a high-level workshop where film music will be examined from many perspectives: historical, psychological, dramatic, stylistic and more.

Craig Richey to Score “No Pay, Nudity”

Craig Richey was engaged to score ‘No Pay, Nudity’ starring Gabriel Byrne and Nathan Lane. A touching comedy about New York actors in perpetual mid-life crisis, in constant fear their careers may be over, and in the process of coming to accept that ‘success’ might look different than they had imagined.

Tom Peters Tours Nosferatu

Tom Peters is touring with his live score for Nosferatu. His first stop is Portland, Oregon in October. Tom’s live electronic score seamlessly weaves through Nosferatu’s dark alleys. Tom specializes in creating music for silent films, performing original scores through looping electronics and synchronized electronic soundscapes with his bass.

VJ Rosales in Feature Film

The Filharmonics with alumnus VJ Rosales will be appearing in the feature film, Perfect Pitch 2. Due out in 2015, the sequel to the 2012 musical comedy that follows Fat Amy and Beca through their senior year at Barden University.
