Linda Rose in Schubertiade

Violin faculty member Linda Rose will perform on a Schubertiade concert October 12, 2013, sponsored by Steinway Society of Riverside County and Coachella Valley Repertory Theatre at The Atrium in Rancho Mirage. The other performers are pianists Linda love, and James Mccormick, baritone Jacob Bartle and cellist Kihae Kim.

Nicola Said to attend Mozarteum and sing at St. Martin-in-the-Fields

The Austrian Ambassador to Malta, Petra Schneebauer, announced that Alumnus Nicola Said has been nominated for a scholarship at the summer academy at the Mozarteum. She has also been asked to be a soloist in the Brandenburg Choral Festival, in the “Vivaldi Gloria by Candlelight” which takes place at St. Martin-in-the-Fields in London.

Marina Harris in Carnegie Hall Neighborhood Concert

Carnegie Hall will present Alumna Marina Harris in a Neighborhood Concert on Saturday, February 8, 2014. The Carnegie Hall Website notes, “Whether she’s spinning Fiordiligi’s dizzying coloratura passages in Mozart’s opera Così fan tutte or piercing audience’s hearts in an aria from a Bach sacred work, there’s little soprano Marina Harris can’t do. Critics agree—San Francisco Chronicle praised her “powerhouse vocal display … flair and well placed high notes.” Harris recently made her Carnegie Hall debut as part of The Song Continues in a master class with beloved soprano Jessye Norman.”

Jaclyn Rose release party in NYC

Alumna Jaclyn Rose had a stellar release party in NYC for her new album, ‘The Story of The Rose Movement.’ audioEMIT attended the event and posted a review including glowing quotes from many of the patrons.

Last October, Jaclyn won the JazzPhil-USA’s Eighth Annual Talent Search Showcase. She was awarded a featured slot at JazzPhil-USA’s annual Jazz and World Music Festival at Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles, an invitation to the Philippine International Jazz Festival in Manila, and a recording deal with Ric Ickard Records.

Kyle Schafer in finals of Angel City Arts Young Artist Competition

Pianist Kyle Schafer performed with the 916 Quartet in the finals of the Angel City Arts 2013 Young Artist Competition at the Blue Whale.

The competition gives young jazz musicians the opportunity to have their original music heard and evaluated by working jazz professionals.Winners of the competition will receive $1,000, and perform at the 2013 Angel City Jazz Festival in the first two weeks of October.

BCCM Hosts SoCal Day of Percussion

BCCM hosted the SoCal Day of Percussion on September 22. The three guest clinicians were all associated with CSULB as alumni or lecturers.

Alumnus Chad Wackerman is a session drummer who recorded 26 albums with Frank Zappa. Chad has also performed with Barbra Streisand, Men At Work, and James Taylor, as well as recording five of his own critically acclaimed CDs.

Lecturer Brad Dutz is one of the world’s foremost hand percussionists with over 250 CDs with artists such as Kiss, Alanis Morriestte, and Willie Nelson. He has toured with Maynard Ferguson and performed on sound tracks for King of the Hill, Firefly, Enterprise, The Bourne Legacy, Anchorman, and many, many more.

Alumnus Ian Grom has quickly become a legend in drums corps. Ensembles he has coached have earned unprecedented 22 WGI medals since 2005. He is one of the top composers on the national marching scene. Ian is also a successful commercial composer with music licensed for ESPN and Fox Sports.

Marina Harris at SF Opera

Alumnus Marina Harris sang the role of Elena in the San Francisco Production of “Mefistofele” by Arrigo Boito, Boito is most well known for his librettos to Verdi’s “Otello” and “Falstaff.”

As a second year Adler Fellow with the San Francisco Opera, this season Marina will sing in three world premieres with the company. She will also also cover the roles of Fiordiligi in “Così fan tutte” and Alice Ford in ”Falstaff.”

BCCM Jazz Studies Students Cast as Extras for Feature Film

The BCCM Jazz Studies area was recently contacted by a Hollywood casting agency seeking to hire extras for a feature film about college jazz bands entitled Whiplash.  Shooting will take place during the end of September and will include CJO members Drew Ninmer, Jason Fabus, Taylor Smith, Patrick Lenertz, Adam van Vleet, and SJB member Gary Soland.

According to Prime Casting, the students and the Bob Cole Conservatory will receive credits. Whiplash won an award as a short at Sundance and is now being remade as a feature. The movie focuses on a drummer  in an elite jazz orchestra conservatory as he struggles to impress a merciless teacher.

John Van Houten: Busy Summer Perfomer

Tuba Instructor John Van Houten played his 32nd year with the Long Beach Municipal Band as Principal Tubist and his 22nd Year as Contractor. He also performed on “Zelda” at the Greek Theater, “Aida” with the LA Phil and Dudamel at the Hollywood Bowl, “Toy Story’s Thanksgiving Special”, Disney’s “Drawn To Magic” music for their theme parks, and on several “Family Guys” soundtracks.
