Chamber Ensembles

The Department Of Music is proud to offer a wide variety of chamber music experiences for the aspiring professional musician. Coached and conducted by the foremost leaders in the field, the ensembles exhibit a very high level of performance excellence. Each ensemble is in popular demand and performs concerts both on and off campus. The philosophy of the chamber music program is to provide students with a wide exposure to and performance of the standard and contemporary chamber literature. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the chamber ensemble program by experiencing a variety of performance ensembles.

Clarinet Choir

Open to all students, the Clarinet Choir is the newest addition to the woodwind chamber program.

Utilizing instruments from E flat soprano to B flat contrabass, the choir affords the opportunity for students to extend their performance experience to the entirety of the clarinet family. Performing literature written specifically for the ensemble, the group uses flexible instrumentation depending on the demands of the piece.

Flute Choir

Open to all students, the Flute Choir is a unique performance ensemble that employs piccolo through bass flutes. Membership totals over twenty players.

Students are encouraged to perform on all of the choir instruments in order to gain practical performance experience on each. (Piccolo, Alto, Bass). Flexible chairs and instrumentation is used when called upon by the literature. The Flute Choir performs twice a semester and enjoys a loyal following of concert goers.

Saxophone Ensemble

The Saxophone Ensemble consists of instruments from sopranino through bass saxophone. Known as one of the finest ensembles of its kind, the group has performed nationally and internationally at prestigious concert venues including the World Saxophone Congress in Pesaro, Italy.

The group is active in commissioning and performing new works for saxophone ensemble by such composers as James DiPasquale, Dan Higgins, Walter Hartley, and Mauro Bruno. Membership in the group is by audition.

University Wind Quintet

Membership in the University Wind Quintet is by audition and is composed of the finest wind performers in the Department of Music. A scholarship award comes with membership in the Quintet.

Known for its consistent superior quality of performance, the group is very active performing concerts, presentations, and in competitions throughout the West, including the renowned Coleman and Monterey Chamber Competitions. The University Wind Quintet has recently recorded for The Enjoyment of Music, published by Norton and for Christopher Caliendo Publications.

Woodwind Chamber

The Woodwind Chamber Music program is available to all students. Mixed woodwind ensembles from duets to larger groups are assembled relative to available performers and the instrumentation of the literature to be performed.

Students are assigned literature and teamed according to experience and ability level. Formal concerts are given twice each semester.
