Bachelor of Music, Option in Performance—Concentration in Percussion

The purpose for the Percussion Program is to provide students with quality instruction on a variety of instruments in a variety of styles. Students study each instrument with a specialist, thereby receiving great depth in each area. The faculty are also professional performers, some of whom are considered to be among the top performers/teachers in their particular expertise. The students have the opportunity to study many different instruments in a variety of music styles (both Western and Non Western), ensuring they become a well-rounded and versatile percussionist. The students also have the opportunity to specialize in an area of their choice. The ideal percussion graduate should have the ability to perform on a competent level in a variety of musical settings, perform on a mallet instrument, and have the knowledge to teach in a variety of situations. The ensembles cover many styles including classical, jazz, contemporary, and world music such as African, Brazilian, and Caribbean.

Only the most highly qualified undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to the Master’s Degree in Performance Program at CSULB. Graduate students and studio teachers work closely together to establish the highest possible level of performance. The program requires focus, commitment, and absolute dedication to the most demanding artistic and academic standards. Every possible performance opportunity should be embraced by MM candidates, including solo and chamber competitions, master class performances and summer festivals.
