Please join us in April for our Spring production of Jacques Offenbach’s frolickingly fabulous Orpheus in the Underworld. Fully staged with orchestra, the performance will be in English so you won’t miss out on any of the fun!

Originally intended as a satire of the repressive French government of the time, Orpheus’ 1858 premier in Paris is a wacky re-telling of the Greek Orpheus myth. The serious opera world was turned upside down by Offenbach’s musical and dramatic audacity and scandalized by the bawdiness of musical numbers such as the famous "Can Can."

David Anglin, our Director of Opera Studies, will conduct. Suzan Hanson—a favorite singing artist of Long Beach Opera—is our guest Stage Director. Our re-imagined Orpheus will start in the present day, but when the Gods journey to the underworld they find the folks down under are still frolicking in the roaring 1920s!
