Events and Announcements

  • The Geology Department is happy to invite you to attend the March 12 dinner meeting of the South Coast Geological Society in the Chartroom, 6:00-9:00pm. Rick Behl will present his topic "The Santa Barbara Record of Two Volcanic Winters Triggered by Twin Yellowstone Supervolcano Eruptions 631,000 years ago." RSVP is required.
  • The Geology Department's seminar speaker on February 21 was geology MS student Vural Çakir. Vural is a Master's Grant recipient from the Turkish Fulbright Commission. He will shared the culture and geology of Turkey in a fun and informal talk with lots of pictures. The title of Vural's talk was "The Culture, History, and Geology of Turkey." Seminar Time and Location: Wednesday, February 21, 12:30pm in HSCI 382.
  • Leo Giannetta wins first place in the Master's division for best poster at the Pacific Section American Association of Petroleum Geologists Student Expo.

  • Patrick O'Connell won the Outstanding Student Presentation Award for his talk at the Groundwater Resources Association of California's 2017 Conference and 26th Annual Meeting.

  • Geology Department Chair Dr. Rick Behl is President-Elect of the Pacific Section of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG).

  • The Geology Department Alumni camping trip was held on April 29-30 at Lake Cachuma and included several field trips.

  • Several CSULB Geology students have been awarded PSAAPG and LABGS scholarships, including John Farrell, Joseph Gutierrez and Cesar Mejia.

  • The Geology Department hosted the South Coast Geological Society dinner in March. Dr. Matt Becker spoke on "Where Groundwater Meets Ocean: California, Easter Island, Hawaii, and Tahiti."

Welcome to The Department of Geological Sciences at California State University Long Beach!

Since 1955, our program has a proud tradition with a continuing commitment in preparing our students for professional careers or further post-graduate education. Our program is based solidly in fundamental geological skills with an emphasis in field experiences. We offer the degrees at both the Bachelor's and Master's level.

We are located 10 minutes from the beach, one hour from the mountains and the San Andreas Fault, and two hours from the desert!
