Born and raised in Bolivia, José Sánchez-H. is a filmmaker and author of the book The Art and Politics of Bolivian Cinema, nominated for a Theatre Library Association Award. His on-going research on Latin American cinema includes his collaboration on film preservation with the Academy Film Archive of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences™, and the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival.

He writes for the book International Film Guide, published annually in London by Wallflower Press. The book is launched at major film festivals including Berlin and Cannes. He is the recipient of the Rackham Dissertation/Thesis Grant, the Distinguished Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activities Award, the Spirit of Moondance Award, and the CSU Rosebud Award for achievement in media arts and education. Professor Sánchez-H. co-authored the feature screenplay La Paz, a semifinalist in the Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting Competition of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences™. His films have aired on Sundance Channel and have screened at international film festivals in Europe and the Americas.

Professor Sánchez-H. is also an award-winning photographer whose work has appeared in books, newspapers and magazines, including the German art magazine neubildende kunst. He holds a Ph.D. in Speech, Communication and Theater (Radio, TV and Film) from the University of Michigan.
