Jack Anderson, author of Shooting Movies Without Shooting Yourself in the Foot, is a 35-year Hollywood veteran who worked his way up through the ranks from camera assistant to director of photography. After studying at the American Film Institute, Jack became a member of IATSE Local 659 (now Local 600), International Cinematographers Guild, through their Camera Assistant Training Program. He learned the art and craft of cinematography working as an assistant or operator with renowned cinematographers Robby Müller, Sven Nykvist, Laszlo Kovacs, Jack Green, Michael Ballhaus, Jost Vacano, Stefan Czapsky, Bobby Byrne, Tak Fujimoto, Charles Rosher, and others. Directors he has worked with include Steven Spielberg, David Lynch, Clint Eastwood, Robert Altman, William Friedkin, Jim Jarmusch, Carl Reiner, Frank Marshall, Paul Verhoeven, James Brooks, Garry Marshall, Lawrence Kasdan, Peter Bogdanovich, Randa Haines, Luis Puenzo, Thomas Schlamme, John Dykstra, Joan Micklin Silver, Barbet Schroeder, Richard Benjamin, Susan Seidelman, and Lawrence Kasdan.
Jack has been director of photography on many independent features and shorts, including Always Say Goodbye, which won best feature at the Hollywood Film Festival. He has shot 2nd Unit/Additional Photography on Hook, Pretty Woman, Noises Off, Bird, and Mad About You, among others.
Jack began teaching a few years ago when he was invited to Grand Valley State University to be director of photography on a film project for their unique summer "Film Practicum" program. This program provides students with a total immersion experience crewing on a film, working with professional actors and filmmakers, shooting in 35mm or with Super-16mm cameras (generously supplied by Panavision). These projects have won many awards at film festivals including the Los Angeles Short Film Festival, the Crested Butte Reel Fest, the East Lansing Film Festival, Instant Films (Los Angeles), the Waterfront Film Festival (Muskegon), and the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival.
The rewards of providing this kind of hands-on real-life experience to aspiring filmmakers led Jack to more teaching. He is now an Associate Professor in the film department at CSULB, teaching lighting and cinematography, while still shooting various projects. He has also taught in the cinema department at University of Southern California, the theatre department at Cornell University, and the film program at the State University of New York at Cortland, and he has been a guest lecturer at Saddleback College (Mission Viejo, California).
Realizing the limitations of classroom instruction for learning the realities of professional filmmaking, Jack wrote Shooting Movies Without Shooting Yourself in the Foot to recreate, as much as possible in written words, the real life experience of working on a professional camera crew. He has also contributed to Student Filmmakers magazine with articles like: "Fried Lighting Circuits on the Set: When Your Genny Fails, and Blowing Granny's Fuse Box is Not an Option"; "Technique and Precautions for Laying Dolly Track"; and "When They Look to You on the Set: Filming a Key Shot for Spielberg's Hook." His article "It Pays to Be Prepared: Tape Your Magazines" appeared both in the print magazine and online.
He holds a BA and an MA from Cornell University, was a Cinematography Fellow at the American Film Institute, and is an alumnus of the Motion Picture Industry Training Program for Assistant Cameramen. He is a member of International Cinematographers Guild (IATSE Local 600), the Society of Camera Operators (SOC), Film Independent (formerly Independent Feature Project), and the University Film and Video Association. He has twice been a presenter at the University Film and Video Association's annual conferences ("Summer Film Project: Students, Faculty, and Professionals Collaborate on a Short Dramatic Film" in 2006 and "Making a Feature Film With A Student Crew" in 2009).
