Instructions for Residence Reclassification

Residence Reclassification Request Form

Current CSULB students wishing to apply for residence reclassification may submit the Residence Reclassification Request Form and Supporting documents: from March 1 to April 1 without a missed deadline fee for the following summer or fall terms, or from October 1 to November 1 without a missed deadline fee for the following spring semester. Reclassification requests may be filed with the missed deadline fee of ten dollars after the close of the filing periods, but under no circumstances will a reclassification request be accepted after the last day of the semester for which reclassification is desired.

Nonresident students will continue to be responsible for nonresident tuition until reclassification is approved by Enrollment Services. Refunds will be made according to Refund Regulations printed in the CSULB Catalog. Please allow up to six weeks to process your request. Requests for residence reclassification for a previous semester are not accepted.

To be eligible as a resident you must be able to demonstrate your physical presence in California, show intent to make California your permanent home, and maintain proper immigration status for at least one year prior to September 20 for a fall semester, January 25 for the spring semester, and June 1 for the summer term. In addition to these requirements, one must be able to show financial independence from parents, both in the current year and in the prior three years.

If you wish to apply for a residence reclassification, please follow these instructions:

  1. Complete a Residence Reclassification Request Form.
  2. Include copies of the following documents to verify California residential ties. (Please DO NOT staple items together)
    • Driver’s License (or state I.D. card if you do not drive)
    • Current and prior automobile registration
    • Voter registration
    • Most recent State income tax return
    • Three most recent federal tax returns
    • Current W2 statement
    • Opening date and branch location where opened of your bank account
    • Proof of when you began employment (on company letterhead)
    • Citizens of other countries will need to provide documentation to verify immigration status
  3. Mail documentation to:

You may also drop off your documentation at BH 101. You will be notified of your residence determination by mail.

Students who have a residence exception must reapply for the exception each semester, using the Residence Reclassification Request Form. All exceptions are effective for one semester only and revert to non-resident the following semester unless reviewed by this office.
