Mr. Deutschman began his career with California State University, Long Beach and the College of Engineering in May 2009 as an academic advisor, working primarily with students on academic probation. Mr. Deutschman holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a Master's degree in Education with an emphasis in Educational Counseling. For several years prior to joining the College of Engineering, he worked at all levels in the K-12 public education system. Since joining CSULB in 2009, Mr. Deutschman's advising responsibilities have grown and he has represented the College of Engineering on various advising related committees including the University Advising Council and Project Ocean. In 2011, Mr. Deutschman was awarded the "QPR Trainer of the Year Award" by Project Ocean for certifying over 400 students in suicide prevention and mental health awareness issues. In the fall of 2011, Mr. Deutschman was selected as the Coordinator of Academic Advising for the college's newly reorganized Engineering Student Success Center. In addition to his advising duties he also serves as a part-time instructor of Engineering's Academic Success Skills course (ENGR 102).
