CEERS Receives $1.8 Million Grant

Cargo Boat

The College of Engineerings Center for Energy and Environmental Research and Services (CEERS) has received a $1.84 million grant to investigate methods that could significantly improve air quality in port cities and their adjacent areas. As part of this project, principle investigator Dr. Hamid Rahai and his research team will install and test a seawater scrubber on the CMA-CGM cargo ship Norma. The project is a partnership between CEERS, Rolls Royce Naval Marine, Inc. and Belco, and is expected to be completed by December of 2014.

In pursuit of its mission to advance the state of the art in air-quality improvement and wind-energy technologies, CEERS has also recently completed research into high-efficiency rooftop wind turbines for urban environments. Made possible by a research and development grant from the National Science Foundation, this three-year project has yielded turbines that are now in the semi-industrial production and certification phase.
