I warmly welcome you to the first issue of the College of Engineering’s quarterly newsletter. Here you will find the latest news about the College, its exceptional programs, students, faculty, and alumni.
This is a truly exciting era in the engineering marketplace as well as here in the College of Engineering. As reported in US News and World Report and myriad other journals, emerging technologies have caused the demand for talented engineers of virtually all disciplines to quickly outpace the supply in recent years. As a result, the number of admission applications we received during the years 2003 to 2011 increased from 4081 to 8422.
We have risen to the challenge of meeting this substantial increase in applicants by increasing our enrollment numbers by a brisk-yet-sustainable 8% over each of the past seven years, and we are presently serving more than 4100 students. Additionally, we have implemented a range of student success measures that have yielded us a 25% higher graduation rate during the past five years than that of the preceding five years. In 2012 alone we were able to graduate 671 highly trained engineers into the workforce.
We have also been adding new, cutting-edge elements to our curriculum during the past several years, including essential entrepreneurial skills, and this rising graduation rate in the College has afforded us the opportunity to send into the marketplace greater numbers of engineers each year who have both the technological and the entrepreneurial skills needed to thrive in the competitive world of international trade. Moreover, as these graduates join high-technology companies in the Southern California region and elsewhere, so grows the number of synergistic industrial partnerships that we have, and thus the number of opportunities for our current students to receive real-world training in emerging technologies.
Our strategy for ensuring that our college remains well-positioned to maintain its phenomenal growth includes attracting world-class faculty, expanding our Honors tracks, and continuing to renew our teaching and research laboratories, with an eye toward elevating one or more of these research labs to the national level.
We look forward to keeping you posted on our progress on each of these vital fronts, and on the remarkable accomplishments of our students, faculty, and alumni.
