More Efficient Base Stations Needed to Handle Future Cellular Energy Demand

Mobile device use is exploding. With the rise of the Internet of Things, today’s 5 billion connected devices could increase tenfold by 2020, according to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index.

Information and communication technologies are already responsible for up to 4 percent of the carbon footprint. That amounts to one-quarter of what vehicles produce and the equivalent of what air travel produces.

The mobile growth projections raise two questions, said University of California Irvine Professor Ender Ayanoglu, keynote speaker at the IEEE Green Energy and Smart Systems Conference at the Pointe Monday. CSULB Innovators Inducted into NAI

Cal State Long Beach counts many inventors among its faculty. Scattered throughout the university’s eight colleges,  they have few opportunities to cross paths. But with establishment of a National Academy of Inventors chapter, that has now changed.

On Thursday, nearly two dozen inventors from the colleges of the Arts, Engineering, and Natural Sciences & Mathematics were inducted into the newly created chapter, which will meet once each semester.

The chapter has been championed by Simon Kim, CSULB associate vice president of research and sponsored programs, and College of Engineering Dean Forouzan Golshani, holder of nearly a dozen patents. Continue reading “CSULB Innovators Inducted into NAI”

GESC Keynote Speaker: Moving to Smart Grid a Necessity, Not an Option

It was 1971 when Dr. Merwin Brown first heard the term smart grid. Decades later, there is still disagreement on its definition. But one thing there is no disagreement on is its necessity.

“We must have a smart grid. The smart grid is not an option, it’s a necessity,” said Brown, keynote speaker at Monday’s 7th annual IEEE Green Energy and Smart Systems Conference (IGESSC) at CSULB.

The event, organized by CSULB Electrical Engineering Chair Henry Yeh, draws researchers and practitioners to discuss research about smart systems and sustainable and green energy systems. Record Attendance for IGESC 2015

The IEEE Green Energy and Systems Conference (IGESC) returned to California State University Long Beach for the sixth year on Monday, celebrating record attendance as interest in sustainability increases. This year’s theme was renewable technology for green buildings and energy efficiency.

“I believe there are still a lot of challenges to overcome and many opportunities for research and development projects,” said electrical engineering professor Henry Yeh, who founded the IEEE Systems Council Chapter in 2009 and has served as the conference chair since 2010.
