CSULB offers more than 80 majors to choose from. A student is expected to consider his/her strengths and weaknesses in the process of choosing a major. The key to this decision is that your choice should lead you to a career of a life time of enjoyment and prosperity.
Students who pursue the Biomedical Engineering degree at CSULB have their unique reasons. Some have seen a loved one’s battle with a disease, or have dealt with a parent or sibling with disabilities. But whatever their reason may be they all want to improve the duration and quality of life. They simply refuse to accept ‘what is’.
An engineer by definition is an innovator. An engineer is someone who offers a solution when he/she faces a problem. In the case of the Biomedical Engineers the problem is health related. As an engineering discipline, the program rests upon the same math and physics base as other engineering disciplines. Students follow a curriculum designed to develop a strong foundation in the engineering sciences and a breadth of knowledge in the life sciences.
About 20% of the graduates continue to pursue a professional degree in health sciences. Engineering students generally have a high acceptance rate in Medical School if they do well in their MCAT and maintain a high GPA. Some medical schools require, in addition to a course of general studies, one full year of physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, and biology, each with appropriate labs. Some of these courses will be in addition to the general Biomedical Engineering Road map. However, the advantage of studying Biomedical Engineering is the prospect of a highly respected profession in the case of disappointment in the acceptance to medical schools.
More than half of our graduates pursue a double degree in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering. These students often find a career in the medical device industry. There are more than 30 Medical Device companies in Southern California. These companies usually hire Electrical Engineers and Mechanical Engineers and train them on site to become familiar with the challenges that they will face in the Medical Device Industry. Students who pursue a double degree in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering from CSULB have priority since they are already trained in both fields. The extra degree takes an additional 19 units which can be fulfilled in one added semester.The remaining students will either work at the hospitals as a clinical engineer, or continue to graduate school or enter the work force in medical device industry with a single degree. The clinical engineer at the hospital calibrates and maintains all hospital equipment including the bedside monitors, and orders new purchases and often troubleshoots the problems in the Emergency Room and Operating Room equipment.
