Electrical Engineering (EE)

Summary of MSEE Program Requirements

Each student must apply directly to the Admissions and Records Office. After the admission, the EE Graduate Coordinator will identify any deficiencies that may exist in the student's program and help the student select a tentative 31-unit program (excluding the deficiencies; it is 30 units for the 2008-2009 catalog year). Subsequently the graduate student must advance to candidacy , by completing several requirements. This is an intermediate step in the graduation process but a very important and necessary process. For example, a student cannot register for thesis units, EE 698, unless the student is advanced to candidacy. Each student who successfully advances to candidacy must then complete the rest of the 31-unit program, which, for the thesis student, contains 9 units of thesis work. The student should file for graduation well in advance in anticipation. Then there will be the comprehensive final oral examination.(You must sign-up in advance for the exam.) Completion of the graduate program is a pipeline process, consisting of many steps, each step preceding the following step in an order. It is up to the student to keep up with the flow. A student cannot take courses arbitrarily and then come to the advisor saying that he/she wants to graduate that semester. Every course must be pre-approved and every step must be completed before approaching the advisor, requesting for graduation. The flow chart and Worksheet are available from the program advisor. See your advisor and consult the flow chart and the worksheet for important steps to take toward completion of the degree requirements.

Each of the above steps is discussed in detail in the following sections.

*Note: although every effort is made to keep this Web site up to date, you should also consult the online catalog for official information and program requirements, which may vary depending on the year you enter(ed) the program.
