  • CSULB 2012 Spring Job Fair will take place on Thursday, February 23, 12:00-4:00pm at the University Student Union. Participating employers include: Northrop Grumman, NAVAIR, LAPD, Peace Corps, Kiewit, Defense Contract Audit Agency, Fluor, Kaiser Permanente, Orange County Transportation Authority, Raytheon, California State Auditor, Urban Science.
  • California State Polytechnic University, Pomona and the Management Information Systems Student Association (MISSA) will be organizing the 16th Annual Information Technology Competition (ITC) to be held Saturday, April 21, 2012. The Information Technology Competition hosted by MISSA, is an event where students from various educational establishments gather to exercise their expertise in the Information Technology field. By competing in this year’s IT Competition, teams of students from several universities will apply their skills in information technology to real-world business scenarios to the best of their abilities.   • U.S. Tech Firms Add Jobs Despite Automation: While U.S. technology companies are automating faster than ever before, tech hiring is nonetheless rising, according to a new report by Forrester and the National Science Foundation (NSF). Software and IT services are on the rise as more of the economy moves online.
  • Average Silicon Valley Tech Salary Passes $100,000: Average annual salaries for Silicon Valley technology workers surpassed the $100,000 mark last year for the first time ever, pushed higher by the strength of the region's latest boom. According to IT jobs site, salaries for software and other engineering professionals in Silicon Valley rose 5.2% to an average $104,195 last year, outstripping the average 2% increase, to $81,327, in tech-workers' salaries nationwide.
  • Google's Marissa Mayer Says More Women Needed in Tech: During the Women in Technology panel at CES in Las Vegas, Google VP Marissa Mayer commented on the progress of women in the high-tech industry over the past ten years

Job Description: As a developer at Chime Superior you will be in charge of the development of multiple iOS applications and maintaining the company website. In conjunction with the rest of the team, you will play a large role in deciding what apps will be designed and what functionality they will include.

Research Assistant in NASA funded project

Dr. Panadda Marayong from the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department is looking for a CECS student (preferably undergraduate) student to work on a NASA funded research project. The project involves developing a software framework to integrate force-feedback device to an existing NASA software for cockpit display. It's a paid position for about 10-15hrs/wk. The position is available immediately.

Seeking student to work in CATSAI project

Dr. Hamid Hefazi is looking to fill two positions in the College of Engineering Boeing Center (CATSAI). There are two immediate positions for a computer engineering or EE major to work in the Boeing Center (CATSAI) here in the college of engineering. The positions require someone with the skills to design and integrate a robotic system. He/she will help select motors and other needed hardware and assemble/integrate the hardware and program and test its functionality. He/she will work with a mechanical engineering student. Other requirements are US citizen permanent resident, graduate or senior with graduation date no earlier than December 2012, good academic performance.

Summer employment at Griffiss Institute

Summer employment applications are currently being accepted at the Griffiss Institute for project work to be done for the Air Force Research Laboratory, Information Directorate, Rome NY. The mission of the Information Directorate is to lead the discovery, development, and integration of affordable warfighting information technologies for our air, space and cyberspace force.   • Only those candidates who are highly motivated and eager to begin their career in technology within our financial services organization will be considered. Business and Technical knowledge is required to succeed in the program. Other specific qualifications include:
  • Rising seniors with limited opportunities for rising sophomores and juniors
  • Working towards a BA/BS degree, in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and/or MIS is preferred
  • Preferred GPA of 3.2+
  • Previous related internship experience and/or other relevant experience is preferred
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills
  • Working knowledge of C, C++, Java, C#, Visual Basic, SQL, networking and infrastructure and/or server administration

Summer Employment at the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth

The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) is seeking instructors and teaching assistants for our summer programs. CTY offers challenging academic programs for highly talented elementary, middle, and high school students from across the country and around the world. NSF REU: Research Experience for Undergraduates

NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

The page on Computer and Information Science and Engineering NSF REU sites has a list of programs for this upcoming summer. There are programs available nearby at Harvey Mudd, USC, UC Santa Cruz, UC Berkeley as well as just about every state such as New York, Texas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Utah, Virginia, etc.

In the sections below, you'll find a description of some of these.

REU: Computation Across the Disciplines

Marquette University's Summer 2012 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program will run for ten weeks (May 29 to Aug 3, 2012). This program provides U.S. undergraduates with an intensive, faculty-mentored, summer research experience in the areas of applied mathematics, high-performance computing, statistics, ubiquitous and embedded systems and mathematics / CS education. Our target audience is undergraduates of all levels majoring in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or related areas.

Program details, including online application materials and project descriptions from three previous summers, can be found at Marquette University's Summer 2012 Research Experience for Undergraduates website. The application deadline is March 9th, 2012.

REU: Empirical Software Engineering

The Summer 2012 offering of the University of Alabama (UA) Research Experience for Undergraduates in Empirical Software Engineering (REU-ESE) spans nine weeks (May 30 to August 1) and offers research and professional development opportunities for 10 undergraduate students. Available research projects share the theme of empirical software engineering and span several exciting areas of inquiry, including text retrieval based feature location, code clone evolution, software engineering techniques and tools for computational science & engineering, and open-source developer communities.

REU-ESE participants will conduct empirical studies. That is, they first will use observation to collect and analyze data and experience and then will synthesize that data to discover, characterize, and evaluate relationships between software development artifacts, techniques, and tools.

The REU-ESE 2012 website has complete details about the program, including an online application that must be submitted by the deadline of March 15, 2012.

REU: Imaging and Computer Vision (iMagine)

The Department of Computer Science and the Center of Imaging and Optics at Montclair State University are pleased to organize a 8 week intensive undergraduate research program on imaging and computer vision where students will work individually and collaboratively on a wide variety of imaging and computer vision problems benefiting from a group of experienced research mentors. In 2012, the REU site will take place between May 20 and July 14. Four faculty mentors from within the CS and Math departments will provide supervision.

Here are some highlights:

  • Deadline for application: MARCH 18, 2012
  • The students will live and work in campus for the project period and will be compensated for their participation with a stipend

of $4000. In addition, their lodging in campus will be paid and a daily meal allowance will be provided. Travel to and from Montclair are also covered (up to $500).

  • The program is open to computing related majors with at least one year of courses taken within the program of study. In our understanding, computing related areas include but are not limited to computer science, computational science, computer engineering, information technology, information systems, bioinformatics, electrical engineering, physics or mathematics. The students are also expected to know how to program in at least one high level language such as but not limiting to C, C++, or Java.
  • Eight positions are available each year. One of the students will play the role of peer mentor / student assistant and will start work in April 2012 (with additional compensation).
  • Funding is limited to United States citizens or US permanent residents. Members of the underrepresented groups are particularly invited to apply.
REU: Intelligent Agents

DePauw University is hosting a research experience for undergraduate students (REU) during the summer of 2012. This year, we have projects on evaluating intelligent agents, developing an IDE for a functional programming language, security of social networking apps, and parallel processing (further details can be found at the link below). The program runs from May 30 to August 3. Applications must be received by March 2 to receive priority consideration. All applications must be received by March 16.

The students receive a stipend of $5,000 for the summer, as well as a $750 food allowance for the summer.

REU: AI and graph algorithms

The Willamette Valley Mathematics Research Consortium for Undergraduates and Teachers is a summer REU-RET program at Willamette University, Linfield College, Lewis & Clark College, and the University of Portland. All four schools are located in the Willamette Valley of northwest Oregon. Summers in Oregon are known for warm dry days with no humidity; a perfect environment for activities such as hiking, biking, and math research!

Our program consists of four research teams, one per partner institution, each with four students, one teacher, and two faculty mentors for an eight-week REU and seven-week RET. Each team will focus on one of four challenging research projects from a faculty mentors' area of expertise.

Application Deadline: March 5, 2012.

REU: Hope College

For the 21st summer, Hope College is hosting a Computer Science NSF REU summer undergraduate research program in 2012. We have support for at least four undergraduate researchers who are not Hope students. Students are encouraged to consider this opportunity to be involved with computer science research. We have a special initiative to encourage the participation of students from underrepresented groups. Application materials and other information are available on the website.
