Dr. Ko joined the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management at California State University, Long Beach in Fall 2009. Dr. Ko received his B.S. degree in Structural Engineering from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, Taipei, Taiwan in 1997 and his M.S. and Ph.D. (outstanding Ph.D. award recipient) degrees in 2001 and 2005, respectively, in Civil Engineering focusing on Structural Mechanics and Structural Engineering/Dynamics from the University of California, Los Angeles. Prior to joining CSULB, Dr. Ko was a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of California, Los Angeles and senior structural design engineer at Englekirk and Sabol Consulting Structural Engineers, Inc. Dr. Ko is a registered Professional Civil Engineer in the State of California.
Dr. Ko's areas of research interest include: micro/nano-mechanics modeling of heterogeneous composite materials, micromechanical damage mechanics modeling and associated applications, damage assessment and experimental mechanics of structural materials, nonlinear/linear structural dynamic analysis of structures subjected to earthquake motions, finite element method, code-based and performance-based structural design of structures, and seismic retrofitting of existing structures. Dr. Ko also performed various experiments to study the mechanics of materials, including the ultrasonic nondestructive test (NDT), the direct tension/compression tests of concrete subjected to environmental attack, and experimental fracture mechanics.
Dr. Ko has made presentations at several national and international conferences and published several innovative research papers in peer-reviewed journals such as International Journal of Damage Mechanics, Acta Mechanica, and other technical journals. He also actively participates in ASCE, ASME, AISC, SEAOSC, IACM, USACM, and other national and international societies. He is also a peer reviewer for the International Journal of Damage Mechanics, Acta Mechanica, Journal of Engineering Mechanics - ASCE, Composites Part A, Engineering Structures, International Journal of Theoretical and Applied Multiscale Mechanics, and other technical journals.
