Commencement Awards

For CNSM Students

The following are Commencement awards and honors available to students. Please be sure to note the deadlines for application. For more information about these awards, contact the department of your major or the Dean's Office, HSCI-160.

  1. CNSM Outstanding Graduate Award
    • The CSULB Alumni Association recognizes an undergraduate in each college as a CSULB Outstanding Graduate. Nominations of deserving students with majors in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics who graduate in Fall 2015, Winter 2016, Spring 2016, or Summer 2016 are solicited from faculty, staff, alumni, and students. See your major department for more details.
    • The application period for 2016 has closed.
  2. Graduate Dean's List of University Scholars and Artists
    • Masters students only. Students submit their application to the appropriate department office. Departments will forward applications to the college deans, who recommend up to four nominees to the Graduate Dean. The top 1% of CNSM graduate students pursuing a graduate degree are eligible. All students nominated for this award must be eligible to be receiving a diploma dated December 2015, January 2016, May 2016, or August 2016.

    • Departments' recommendation due to College office: Thursday, March 24, 2016
  3. Outstanding Thesis Award
    • Nominated by graduate thesis advisors. Evaluation criteria of thesis include: quality of presentation – appearance, format, style, language, clarity, etc., and quality of research – scientific methodology, likelihood of publication (i.e., presentation at professional conference, manuscript submitted for publication, etc.).
    • CNSM recognizes truly outstanding theses completed between Summer 2015 and Spring 2016 – up to six – one possible in each department

    • Departments' recommendation due to college office: Friday, March 25, 2016.
  4. Robert D. Rhodes Award
    • Recognizes CNSM outstanding graduating baccalaureate students (one per department) who will graduate in Fall 2015, Winter 2016, Spring 2016, or Summer 2016.
    • The application period for 2016 has closed.
    • Due to Department Office: Monday, March 21, 2016. Due to College Office Friday, March 25, 2016.

Honors

Students completing their degrees in Fall 2015, Winter 2016, Spring 2016, and Summer 2016 are eligible for this honor.

  1. Departmental Honors
    • With the approval of the dean of the college, departments may elect to award departmental honors to their graduates based on GPA and/or other criteria determined by the department. Departmental honors are usually reserved for students whose outstanding performance is not otherwise recognized by university or college awards. The number of honors awarded by a department shall be limited to three students or five percent of graduates, whichever is larger.

    • Nominations due to the Department: Monday, March 21, 2016. Nominations due to the CNSM Dean's Office (up to 3 from each department): Friday, March 25, 2016.
  2. Departmental Graduate Student Honors
    • In recognition of outstanding graduate student achievements, departments may honor graduating master's and doctoral degree candidates by special recognition in the annual commencement ceremonies. The number of honors awarded by a department shall be limited to three students or five percent of graduates, whichever is larger. Departmental honors are usually reserved for students not otherwise recognized by university or college awards. These honors are normally conferred for excellence in and contributions to the discipline, including outstanding seminar papers, artistic exhibitions, special achievements in field work, and service in university committees and functions, as well as participation in scholarly and professional organizations resulting from student research.

    • Nominations due to the Department: Monday, March 21, 2016. Nominations due to the CNSM Dean's Office (up to 3 from each department): Friday, March 26, 2016.

Graduation with Academic Honors

This designation is ONLY certified at the posting of the degree in the term of graduation. Thus, Spring 2015 graduates with honors will not be officially recognized until degrees are posted in June 2015. These honors are noted on the diploma and transcript.

  1. Summa Cum Laude honor graduate (B.A./B.S. only) – 3.95 – 4.0 on ALL college work with 45 units or more here at California State University, Long Beach. Official conferral of honor is determined during final processing of degree audit following semester of completion.
  2. Magna Cum Laude honor graduate (B.A./B.S. only) – 3.75 – 3.95 on ALL college work with 45 units or more here at California State University, Long Beach. Official conferral of honor is determined during final processing of degree audit following semester of completion.
  3. Cum Laude honor graduate (B.A./B.S. only) – 3.5 – 3.75 on ALL college work with 45 units or more here at California State University, Long Beach. Official conferral of honor is determined during final processing of degree audit following semester of completion.

Associated Students, Inc. Awards and Honors

Any student, faculty, or administrator may nominate. Deadline to apply for these awards is in April. Awards are presented at the ASI Banquet. For deadline dates, applications and more information, contact the Associated Students, Inc., (Student Government) phone: 562-985-5241 or at the ASI website.

  1. Earl Durham Jr. Student Government Award – for a male student who exemplifies leadership relationships in ASI.
  2. Gabrielino/Forty-Niner Award – the highest ASI honor for graduation BA/BS and graduate students.
  3. Golden Nugget Award – student service award for achievements during current academic year.
  4. Irvin Hakim Hurst Award – recognizes a BA/BS or MA/MS representing concerns of minority students.
  5. Sheila Ringer Woman of the Year Award – recognizes upper-division or graduating senior female leader role model.
  6. Student Organization of the Year.

Other Academic Honors and Honor Societies

  1. President's Honor List (Determined by GPA. 3.75-4.0 GPA, minimum of 12 units during a semester, designation made at the end of semester, noted on transcripts, letter sent to student.)
  2. Dean's Honor List (Determined by GPA. 3.50-3.74 GPA, minimum of 12 units during a semester, designation made at the end of semester, noted on transcripts, letter sent to student.)
  3. National Dean's List publication (selected by the Dean of the College).
  4. Mortar Board (seniors, selected in last semester of junior year – by invitation only).
  5. Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities publication honor.
  6. National Honor Societies (selected by the individual societies) – for those majoring in the CNSM:
    1. Phi Beta Kappa (scholarly achievement in the liberal arts & sciences, by invitation only);
    2. Phi Kappa Phi (Scholarly scholarship, all academic areas – by invitation only);
    3. Golden Key (juniors/seniors with 30 or more units with a 3.40 GPA or better);
    4. Phi Beta Delta (international scholars);
    5. Phi Delta Gamma (distinguished scholarship – for graduate students only);
    6. Pi Mu Epsilon (for Mathematics/Statistics majors); and
    7. Sigma Xi (national honor society for scientists).
