Historical Mission and Current Commitment to the recruitment, retention, training, graduation, and success of underrepresented, low-income and first-generation students at CSULB – Results of a 2013 University Task Force Study.
This Taskforce Study was charged with identifying and understanding the relevant programs existing across the university, their history on campus, and their beneficial activities, relating to CSULB's historical and continuing commitment to the recruitment, retention, training, and graduation of students from underrepresented and underserved (UR/US) backgrounds. Although the study was initially prompted by biomedically-related programs seeking funds from the National Institutes of Health, the scope of the study necessarily broadened to encompass the many and varied programs that serve the needs of all UR/US students at CSULB. The findings of the taskforce study are therefore relevant to the whole university, and they provide a broader assessment of the university's historical commitment to UR/US students. The Taskforce discovered an extensive and complex constellation of remarkable programs and activities that began notably early in the university's history and which continued to grow and develop over decades into one of the most impressive "systems" of programs in the nation successfully facilitating access and success of UR/US students. The results of this study indicate that CSULB is a national leader in its commitment to diversity and excellence in education and scholarship –it is an historical and present theme and emphasis that should bring distinct pride to academic community we refer to as "The Beach."
