Award Winning Peruvian Author On Campus

March 3, 2015

Claudia Salazar Final-page-001Award-winning Peruvian author, Claudia Salazar Jiménez will be on campus Monday, March 16th at 4pm for a Book Presentation and Q/A Session. Her novel, La sangre de la aurora (Bloody Dawn) was recently awarded the prestigious “Premio de las Américas”. The novel is an exploration of the role of women in Peru during the insurrection of the guerrilla group known as the Sendero Luminoso (Shinning Path) in the 1980s. Three fragmented stories – a lesbian photographer from Lima, a terrorist teacher, and a peasant from Ayacucho– are interwoven to recreate a heartbreaking episode in Peru’s history. Nonetheless, this novel goes beyond the themes of violence, war, and terror. Salazar brings into play the displaced female body, the fragmented discourse, and the visual representations of women, which allow her female voices to recount past events that are not only part of Peru’s history but also part of human existence.
