Guest Lecture: "Communicative Breakdowns in Asylum Hearings"
March 11, 2014Come join scholar Marco Jaquemet (University of San Francisco) on Wedesday, March 12 as he presents his lecture titled “Communicative Breakdowns in Asylum Hearings” as part of the Language & Social Justice in Italy lecture series presented by the College of Liberal Arts Scholarly Intersections Initiative; and the Departments of Anthropology, Linguistics, and Romance, German, Russian Languages & Literatures.
This lecture series explores the intersection of language teaching, learning, and writing with the study of political movements and minority/disadvantaged groups.
The scholars featured here have found in Italy’s changing demographics a rich site for the study of language as a marker of evolving social structures, institutions and practices. Their work will shed light on the Italian context as well as provide a stimulating lens through which to analyze parallel issues in contemporary American/Californian language politics.
