Lens on Long Beach: A Community-CSULB Dialogue

Screen Shot 2014-02-18 at 1.33.52 PMJoin the event “Lens on Long Beach: A Community–CSULB Dialogue” on Tues., Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. in the Anatol Center. The event will feature a screening of broadcast news coverage by CSULB Journalism Department students, as well as a moderated discussion responding to the challenges and solutions highlighted in their videos. The student journalists have covered many critical issues facing the city–including high rates of childhood asthma in West Long Beach, sex trafficking in North Long Beach, and the widespread deployment of surveillance cameras downtown.
 
The panelists include Teresa Gomez, Human Dignity Program coordinator for the City of Long Beach; Norma Chinchilla, co-founder of the Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition (and, a Sociology faculty member); Darick Simpson, director of the Long Beach Community Action Partnership; Christopher Covington, VoiceWaves reporter; and Carla Yarbrough, a Journalism & Mass Communication Department faculty member.
The event is jointly sponsored by CSULB’s Multicultural Center; the CSULB Department of Journalism & Mass Communication; the National Association of Hispanic Journalists; and VoiceWaves, a non-profit youth media training organization.
