The LifeFit Center is helping change lives every day. Each day, we get to share inspiring stories from our members. These are some of their amazing stories:

andy haleANDREW HALE - LFC Member

"I am 72 years of age and have been coming to the LifeFit Center since December (2103) when I was having trouble with my legs, my ankle, knees, my balance, my walking and climbing stairs. It was difficult for me to walk without stumbling. It is now July 2014 and I am walking up and down the steps of my house without needing to use the hand rail. I just worked out in the big dance room and I was able to do laps across the wide room jumping, with both feet off the ground. It is just a remarkable improvement. And by the end of December, New Year's Eve, my birthday, my goal is to run a quarter mile around the track."

I just love coming to LifeFit!! I have barely been a member for 2 weeks and have met so many nice people and instructors!

Emily Sopo - LFC Staff

After working in several fitness facilities over the past few years, I can proudly say that the LifeFit Center is the place to be. I’ve been a group exercise instructor at the LFC since a little after it opened and did independent study through the center in Fall 2013. After nearly three years in Long Beach State’s Master’s in Kinesiology program, my involvement at the LifeFit Center has been the highlight of my graduate career and the best job I’ve had to date.

The LifeFit Center is not just a fitness facility – it is a supportive, nurturing environment that inspires student creativity and fosters relationships between students and community members. The wonderful leadership team has encouraged me to explore new avenues of thinking about fitness. If I have an idea, they give me the support to share it in my classes and in presentations to all of the LFC’s members. My confidence as a fitness professional has grown tremendously thanks to the encouragement I have received from Ayla, Heather, Tim, Heidi, and Doug, to name just a few. Continuing education for fitness professionals is a top priority, as group exercise instructors are encouraged to ask questions, observe each other’s classes, & attend workshops on proper exercise technique. We are continually reminded that we are appreciated. The innovative nature of the center also gives us the chance to learn top-notch equipment and skills, such as using the MyZone system to track heart rate and conducting body composition assessments using the BODPOD. The work environment created at the LFC is something I will strive to achieve in all of my future jobs.

In addition to fantastic coworkers, we have amazing members! Teaching is the highlight of my week. I am inspired to continue to work with this population due to the enthusiasm of members in each and every class, as well as their genuine interest in safe exercises. The LFC creates a bridge between older and younger adults and allows us to teach, learn from, and motivate each other. Additionally, I have learned how to speak to members about injuries, how to modify exercises for them, and how to create a fun class for everyone, regardless of any physical limitations.

The LFC is basically my home at LBSU. I cannot help but smile every time I walk through and see adults of all ages, physical abilities, and backgrounds challenging themselves. It helps that the staff is always friendly and entertaining! I believe every university with a Kinesiology program needs a LifeFit Center to unite students, faculty, staff and community members in their passion for healthy living. Go LifeFit!
