Ayla Donlin, Ed.D. - Director of the LifeFit Center @ The Beach

AylaAyla Donlin obtained her undergraduate degree in Psychology and Business from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. She then moved to warm and sunny California to pursue her Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from LBSU. Upon receiving her Master’s degree, Ayla became a lecturer in the Kinesiology department and has been teaching courses since 2008 in the Fitness and Sport Studies options. Ayla completed her Educational Doctorate in Educational Leadership from LBSU. Ayla is the Co-Director of the Beach Community Wellness Program (BCWP), a community-based wellness program (https://www.facebook.com/lbbcwp). She oversees the Fitness & Wellness Leadership component of the BCWP.

Ayla has been active in the fitness industry for over 10 years as a group fitness instructor, personal trainer, group fitness director, and health club general manager. She is currently an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) certified personal trainer and works with Johnny G. and Matrix Fitness as an International Educational Representative for the Johnny G. Krankcycle ® by Matrix. She has traveled to locations like Singapore and Germany to instruct fitness professionals on the use and benefits of the Krankcycle®. Ayla is also a Master Trainer with MYZONE ®, a heart rate monitor system used at the LifeFit Center.

As a passion and hobby, Ayla has organized, led, and participated in over 75 hours of Spin-a-thon/Krank-a-thon fundraisers benefitting various organizations like Challenged Athletes Foundation, Mychal’s Learning Place, Project VisAbility, and the John Tracey Clinic.

 

Emily Sopo, M.S. - Assistant Director

EmilyEmily originally planned to work in the advertising industry after graduating from Chapman University, but her experience teaching group exercise classes during her senior year convinced her to pursue a career in fitness. Emily immediately began taking coursework in Kinesiology and collecting certfications. Emily is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) and group fitness instructor through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA). She has over 6 years of experience teaching in the fitness industry and recently completed her Master's in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, at LBSU.

A true fitness enthusiast, Emily is happiest when she is exercising or teaching others about health and fitness. In addition to her role at the LifeFit Center, Emily is Master Trainer with MYZONE ®.

Working at the LifeFit Center has been the highlight of Emily's career. She admires members' dedication to fitness and loves learning from fellow staff members.

 

Heidi Engler - Operations & Membership Coordinator

Heidi

Heidi Engler is the Operations & Membership Coordinator at the LifeFit Center. She is a graduate of Long Beach State University with a degree in Kinesiology with an option in Fitness. She is currently pursuing her Masters degree in Leadership at Azusa Pacific University. Heidi is a certified personal trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is a Johnny G KrankCycle certified instructor.

Some of Heidi's joys are Kranking, spinning, spending time under the sun at the beach, reading, being active, and spending time cultivating friendships. She is grateful and excited to continue her work here at the LifeFit Center!

 

 

 

FITNESS PROFESSIONALS

Kaitlyn Jones - Group Fitness Instructor / Saturday Lead

KaitlynKaitlyn graduated in December 2014 from LBSU with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Fitness. Her favorite part of her degree program is the immersion into the fitness industry. With the guidance of amazing professors and mentors, Kaitlyn has been able to attend multiple fitness conventions and events that embody what she loves most about active lifestyles. "Being a part of a community that is so interconnected through drive and determination is more than a blessing!" Outside of the fitness industry, Kaitlyn still enjoys staying active. Hiking, surfing, camping... Just a few of her favorite outdoor activities. Her passion is in yoga! “Yoga has taught me so much about myself and life.”

Kaitlyn holds a Group Exercise Certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA), and she recently completed her Yoga certification. Catch her for private Yoga training or for Yoga class on Fridays at 11 am!

 

DJ Lavertu - Graduate Student Assistant & Service Desk Lead

DJDJ recently graduated from LBSU with his Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Fitness. He is currently working toward his Master of Science in Exercise Science. DJ is the Graduate Student Assistant and Service Desk Lead at the LifeFit Center.

In addition to his responsibilities at the LifeFit Center, DJ is a Teaching Associate for the Department of Kinesiology at LBSU. He has also spent the past two years working in prosthetics development for amputees.

DJ is a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and is the President of the Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC) Student Organization.

 

 

 

Devon Stone - Undergraduate Student Assistant & Service Desk Lead

Devon

Devon is the Undergraduate Student Assistant & Service Desk Lead at the LifeFit Center. An LBSU senior, Devon is working toward his BS in Kinesiology, option in Fitness. Devon also plays for the LBSU Men's Rugby Team.

Devon is passionate about health and wellness and seeks to share this interest with anyone who holds the same appreciation. He accomplishes this as the Vice President of the Exercise is Medicine on Campus (EIMOC) Student Organization and as a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Devon is a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and is actively pursuing a career in the Fire Service. He wants to get hired with the Long Beach Fire Department to give back to the city that has cultivated his growth.

 

Araceli Velasco - Personal Trainer

Araceli

Araceli graduated from Long Beach State University with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, Fitness Option. She is a certified group exercise instructor through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) and has been teaching for over a year. She enjoys nature, interacting with animals, exercising, and dancing. “Teaching group exercise is fun and rewarding for me. Seeing our members improve and hearing their success stories is a great feeling.”

Araceli got the great opportunity to work overseas for the United States Navy. For the summer she stayed at the Yokosuka Naval Base in Japan where she helped run a fitness and nutrition summer camp for kids. The goal was to educate kids about developing a healthy lifestyle so they can grow up to become healthy adults. “It was a great experience interacting with the kids; teaching them different forms of fitness and healthier options they can incorporate in their daily lives.”

She is looking forward to expanding her fitness knowledge and experiencing more of the fitness industry. Her goal is to assist individuals develop a healthy lifestyle; to be fit and build confidence. She wants to educate them on the importance of fitness and all the great benefits it gives us.

 

Anna Garalde - Personal Trainer / Fitness Specialist

Anna

Anna Garalde is a recent LBSU alum, holding a Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology with an option in Fitness. Anna started at the LifeFit Center as an intern, working to complete her hours for her degree. She is now a Certified Personal Trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Anna is currently leading a Strength for Living group and conducting personal training sessions, equipment orientations, and bod pod assessments. On her off time, Anna enjoys getting a good workout in, cooking and baking, and going on adventures.

 

 

Jared Lupian - Personal Trainer / Fitness Specialist

JaredJared is graduated from LBSU in May 2016 with a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology, option in Fitness. He started here at the LifeFit Center as an intern and is now a Certified Personal Trainer through American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). Jared is also a Strength for Living leader and conducts personal training sessions and equipment orientations.

Jared’s passion in life is to help others improve their fitness and wellness. “In my free time, I enjoy basketball, yoga, meditation, and skateboarding. I love to motivate others regardless of physical fitness levels and abilities. My goal is to teach and encourage healthy lifestyle habits that are life-changing.”

 

 

 

Adrian Salazar - Personal Trainer / Group Fitness Instructor

AdrianAdrian has been working at the LifeFit Center as a group fitness leader and a personal trainer for the past two years. He recently completed his undergraduate degree at LBSU with a major in Kinesiology, option in Fitness. Adrian is a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Adrian loves to stay active, whether it be surfing, playing sports or working out at the gym. "Being involved in athletics has taught me a lot about my body and the limits I could break, both mentally and physically. I believe that each and every person has the capacity to surpass their limitations, regardless of what shape they are in. I enjoy helping others realize their true potential."

 

 

 

Asia Yates - Group Fitness Instructor / Fitness Specialist

AsiaAsia fell in love with fitness during her undergraduate years as she earned her Bachelor's degree in Health Science. After graduation, she decided to take her passion for fitness to the next level and earned certifications in PiYo, Pilates Mat, and Reformer.

Asia eagerly pursues her higher education and endeavors to gain a greater understanding of the human body; she is currently enrolled in the Master’s of Kinesiology program at LBSU. As a graduate student, Asia recently began conducting research in the Biomechanics Movement Analysis Lab. Additionally, she started working as a teaching assistant for a Motor Control and Learning course at LBSU. In her free time, Asia continues to focus on improving her own physical health and enjoys hiking, HIIT routines, and running.

 

 

 

Jason Devisfruto - Personal Trainer

Jason Jason is currently finishing his last undergraduate year at LBSU in pursuit of his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology, option in Fitness. Once an intern at the LifeFit Center, Jason now works as a certified personal trainer and is certified through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM). He is also an assistant in the Strength for Living program.

Jason loves resistance training, playing a variety of sports, cooking up healthy recipes, and expanding his unique sock collection. On the weekends, he enjoys paddling for the LBSU Dragon Boat team. His passion in life is to help inspire others to overcome any boundaries and achieve their goals. “I believe that persistence and a positive mindset can help you strive to conquer any obstacles in life. My goal is to help guide and motivate others to develop a physically active and healthy lifestyle.”

 

 

Cecilia Guerrero - Personal Trainer & Group Fitness Instructor

CeciliaCecilia Guerrero is an ACSM certified personal trainer and a recent graduate from LBSU, where she received her Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology – Fitness. Cecilia currently teaches multiple group exercise classes and personal training sessions at the LifeFit Center, and has over 650 hours of internship experience working with a wide variety of individuals.

Cecilia loves to stay active, and has a broad background in athletics and fitness. Some of her favorite activities include: rowing, dancing, weight lifting, running, and rock climbing. It’s through these activities that Cecilia found her passion for fitness. “I love the way I feel after a workout and I want to pass that along to people I meet in my career. I hope the individuals I work with leave the gym feeling refreshed and energized; satisfied and successful; stable and strong.”

After graduation, Cecilia plans on spending a year gaining additional experience in the fitness industry before applying to a Master’s Program in Gerontology-Kinesiology.

 

 

Gabe Gil - Personal Trainer

Gabe

Gabe graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. He is currently working toward his Master of Science in Kinesiology here at LBSU. Gabe is also an intern at the Center for Sport Training and Research (STAR) in the Sport Biomechanics department. He is a certified personal trainer through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). 

Gabe loves teaching others proper exercise habits as well as the value of living an active lifestyle. In his free time, he enjoys activities such as basketball, tennis, running, and hiking.

 

 

 

Carly Maxwell - Personal Trainer & S4L Leader

CarlyCarly has always had a passion for health and wellness. She is a recent graduate from LBSU with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, option in Fitness. Carly is also a certified personal trainer through the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

Carly started as an intern at the Lifefit Center and now leads a cohort of our Strength for Living program and could not be more enthusiastic about it!

In her free time, you can find Carly running at the dog beach, hiking, doing yoga, or adventuring.

 

 

 

Scott Fagan - Personal Trainer & S4L Leader

Scott

Scott graduated from LBSU in Fall 2015 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Fitness. Scott joined the LifeFit team as an intern in his final semester of college; since then, he has taken on roles as a personal trainer and Strength for Living leader. He has his personal training certification from the National Council on Strength and Fitness (NCSF).

In his free time, Scott enjoys working out and visiting with his family and friends. He also participates in recreational activities such as volleyball and flag football.

Scott’s favorite part of being a fitness professional is seeing the progress of his clients and witnessing their enjoyment and feeling of accomplishment when they obtain and even surpass their goals. 

 

 

Nate Wilson - Personal Trainer

Nate

Nate recently graduated from LBSU, where he studied Kinesiology with an option in Fitness. A lifelong athlete, Nate was a member of the LBSU lacrosse team. Nate says that his sports background and military aspirations influence his personal training style. He motivates his clients to push themselves and uses functional movements and a variety of equipment to keep his clients’ sessions exciting and effective.

In his free time, Nate enjoys playing lacrosse, hiking, scuba diving, and any adrenaline-pumping outdoor activities. Nate is currently preparing for a career in naval aviation.

Nate is a certified personal trainer through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).

 

 

 

Juan Salazar - Group Fitness Instructor

Juan

Juan is an undergraduate student at LBSU pursuing his Bachelor of Science Kinesiology with an emphasis in Fitness. He joined the LifeFit Center team as an intern and enjoyed every moment of it. Next, he transitioned from an intern into a group fitness instructor and is certified through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA).  Juan loves teaching group fitness and he is happy to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle through exercise.

In his free time, Juan enjoys working out, reading, writing and hiking. He tries to lead an active, healthy lifestyle and be a good example to others. Juan loves playing both regular and beach volleyball and likes long distant runs outdoors.  Juan even ran the LA Marathon in 2011 and plans to run more marathons in the future!

Juan believes that as a society we can improve the quality of our lives by simply getting up and moving every day. He says that exercise should be an integral part of our lives because it not only helps our physical well-being; it also improves our mental and emotional well-being.

 

 

Kristen Hunsuck - Aqua Fitness Instructor

Kristen

Kristen is a graduate student at LBSU in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She is passionate about helping others accomplish their goals. Kristen enjoys playing soccer and ultimate frisbee, as well as leading Aqua Fitness at the LifeFit Center.
