Option in Sport and Exercise Psychology (Master of Science)

This option is designed to prepare students for careers in sport and exercise psychology, in particular as athletic performance enhancements specialists and/or as researchers and teachers in academic settings.

Requirements

          

Core (21 units):

  • KIN 512 Professional Ethics and Standards in Sport and Exercise Psychology (3)
    Prerequisites: Open to Sport and Exercise Psychology students, or by consent of instructor, or graduate standing.
  • KIN 572 Applied Sport Psychology (3)
    Prerequisites: Open to Sport and Exercise Psychology students, or by consent of instructor, or graduate standing. 
  • KIN 574 Introduction to Sport and Exercise Psychology (3)
    Prerequisites: Graduate standing or consent of the instructor.
  • KIN 576 Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis (3)
    Prerequisites: KIN 696 or consent of instructor
  • KIN 577 Sport in U.S. Culture (3)

Prerequisites: Graduate standing or consent of instructor

  • KIN 578 Psychological Aspects of Exercise and Fitness (3)
    Prerequisites: Open to Sport and Exercise Psychology students, or by consent of instructor, or graduate standing.
  • KIN 696 Research Methods and Statistical Analysis (3)
    Prerequisites: Undergraduate major in Kinesiology or related field, undergraduate Statistic course or equivalent.

2. Elective Courses (9 units):

Select three of the following courses:

  • KIN 529, KIN 573, KIN 575, KIN 579, KIN 630, KIN 633, KIN 697

3. Select either option A or B (6 units):

  • A. Thesis/Project: KIN 698 Thesis/Project (6 units)
  • B. Complete a capstone project by enrolling in KIN 694 and complete three (3) units chosen from Elective Courses.

*Prerequisite courses for option in Sport and Exercise Psychology:

PSY 100 (General Psychology)

Undergraduate course in probability and statistics

KIN 339I (Psychology of Sport Behavior and Athletic Performance).

* Equivalent courses at other institutions may be substituted.
