Early Registration Deadlines for CRJU 491, 492, 497, and 498

The University's usual registration deadlines do not apply to:

  • CRJU 491: Internship (3 units)
  • CRJU 492: Internship (6 units)
  • CRJU 497: Independent Study
  • CRJU 498: Senior Thesis

Unlike most other courses, these courses require a permit to be entered into the system before students may register. Students must secure a permit no later than two weeks (14 calendar days) prior to the start of a semester. The normal add/drop period for does not apply to these courses.

  • CRJU 492: Internship -- In addition to meeting the 14-day advance registration, students wishing to enroll in CRJU 491 or 492 (Internship) must have attended an internship orientation, submitted all required paperwork, and received clearance to enroll from the internship coordinators. Press here for more information.

  • CRJU 497: Independent Study -- In addition to meeting the 14-day advance registration, students wishing to enroll in CRJU 497 (Independent Study) must identify a faculty member with whom they want to work and ask that faculty member to notify the school director.  The school director will issue a permit for the student to enroll. Or, students who have not identified a faculty member with whom they want to work must submit a short (2-3 page) proposal to the school director.  The proposal must contain:

    1. The title of the proposed independent study research paper;
    2. a brief outline of the paper;
    3. three or four references the submitting student used to assemble the outline; and
    4. a statement, made under penalty of disciplinary action, that the student has not submitted a paper on the topic to any professor at CSULB.
    The school director will then assign the student to the appropriate faculty member.
  • CRJU 498: Senior Thesis -- In addition to meeting the 14-day advance registration, students wishing to enroll in CRJU 498 (Senior Thesis) must identify a faculty member with whom they want to work and ask that faculty member to notify the school director.  The school director will issue a permit for the student to enroll.  Generally, students who enroll in 498 have already completed a 497 with the same faculty member.
