Advising Syllabus

Academic advising is a collaborative effort. Our CHHS Advising Syllabus outlines key responsibilities and expectations each individual has in the advising relationship.

Students are expected to review this document prior to meeting with a CHHS advisor.

Vision Statement

The College of Health and Human Services Advising Center at California State University, Long Beach aspires to be a globally recognized model of excellence in holistic and innovative academic advising.

Mission Statement

To further the college and campus goal of graduating a diverse student body with highly valued degrees, the College of Health and Human Services Advising Center promotes students' initiative, independence, and scholarship through holistic and innovative advising methods.

Academic advising both empowers students to create meaningful academic plans consistent with their personal and professional goals, and connects students with quality resources that support integration into and engagement with the campus and global communities.

Goals

  • Utilize a variety of proactive, innovative advising techniques and programs
  • Approach advising as a teaching tool to assist students in designing realistic academic plans for timely, successful degree completion
  • Emphasize the shared responsibility of academic advising between students and advisor
  • Promote student engagement and involvement through multiple platforms, including social media and cross-campus collaboration
  • Provide connections to appropriate resources that enhance students' overall college experience
  • Strengthen students’ understanding of university policies, procedures, and degree requirements
  • Improve quality of advising services by conducting periodic assessments and encouraging continued professional training and development

Student Learning Outcomes

Through the academic advising experiences at the CHHS Advising Center, students will:

Cognitive (Know)

  • Know the importance of General Education (GE)
  • Understand degree requirements as outlined in the University Catalog
  • Know how to find important policy information
  • Understand how university policies affect their individual undergraduate careers
  • Understand the expectations outlined in the advising syllabus

Behavioral (Do)                                       

  • Demonstrate the ability to make effective decisions concerning their degree (such as appropriate major and course selection)
  • Develop an achievable educational plan using the Academic Requirements Report (ARR) and/or Degree Planner
  • Make timely progress towards graduation
  • Utilize various campus resources as needed
  • Take an active role in the advising relationship

Affective (Appreciate)

  • Appreciate the value of the advising experience
  • Recognize the benefits of being involved in campus life
  • Value the opportunities for enhancing critical thinking skills
