LONG BEACH, CA (July 13, 2012)–The summer 2012 Camp Nugget concluded on Friday, July 13, 2012, with an awards ceremony and celebration for campers, their families, and university student staff. At the ceremony, camp staff distributed certificates of completion and awards to the 45 children who participated in this year’s camp. The campers, junior counselors, parents, and volunteers were acknowledged for their help with this summer’s camp. At the conclusion of the ceremony, Ms. Rae Gabelich, Long Beach Council District 8 representative and Foundation for Children’s Health Care Director, presented Dr. Barry Lavay, the camp’s director, with a grant stipend for Camp Nugget Junior Counselors and publically thanked Dr. Lavay for Camp Nugget’s long-standing service to the greater CSULB community.
Now in its 40th year, Camp Nugget is a unique program offered through the CSULB Department of Kinesiology for children ages 5 through 12 with disabilities and special needs. Small group instruction is provided by university Kinesiology students studying towards an Adapted Physical Education Specialist Credential under the supervision of Dr. Barry Lavay. Camp activities include aquatics with swim instruction, instruction in fundamental skills and lead-up cooperative games, outdoor adventure course, and adapted sports. The program is four weeks long and begins usually the last Monday in June and continues through-out the first three weeks in July. Activities are offered on week days from 9:00 am to noon.
Camp Nugget has served hundreds of children within special needs and disabilities. The camp is supported by individuals and private sources to fund camp operation. This year, the tuition of $400 per student was augmented via a generous grant from the Boeing Community Fund, Run Seal Beach and other individual donors. Camp Nugget is seeking monetary support to fund tuition scholarships for camp participants. For more information, visit www.csulb.edu/campnugget or e-mail email@example.com.
