Classroom & Online Conduct and Behavior
It is important that students are respectful towards instructors and fellow classmates, and that their behaviors not interfere with nor disrupt class activities. Therefore, students are expected to adhere to the following rules when attending Marketing and other CBA classes:
- Plan to arrive to class on time and to stay for the entire class period (or until dismissed) because random arrivals and exits are disrespectful and distracting.
- All cell phones, smartphones, and other electronic devices (e.g., pagers, iPods) must be turned off (or on vibrate) and hidden from view during class time. [Consult your instructor as some prefer that cell phones are "off" and others allow that phones are set on vibrate.]
- As per the Dean's mandate and CBA policy, there is NO use of any electronic devices (e.g., cell phones, iPads, smartphones, laptops, etc.) allowed during exams and other graded in-class assignments.
- Laptop and tablet computers are allowed for (quiet) note taking only: i.e., other activities such as checking personal e-mail or browsing the Internet are prohibited.
- Food and beverages are NOT permitted in CBA classrooms. Those must be consumed in designated areas only.
- Students are responsible for what transpired if they miss a class. It is the student’s responsibility to contact a classmate to determine what was missed. [Note: Instructors may have their own set of rules regarding attendance. “Excused absences” are specified in the University "Excused Absences Policy Statement" (e.g., hospitalization, death of an immediate family member).]
- Talking and other disruptive behaviors are not permitted while classes are in session.
- Be polite and respectful towards others, instructor amd other students. Emrys Westacott (2006) offers some "rights and wrongs of rudeness" that apply across cultures.
- It is the student’s responsibility to notify the instructor of record in advance of a need for accommodation of a disability that has been verified by the University.
- Students should address faculty as "Professor" or "Dr." Calling faculty by their first names is not appropriate.
- Students are expected to be professional and respectful of other students, instructors, CBA administration, and staff. That includes verbal and physical behavior as well as language used in email and phone messages.
- Students (and faculty) must adhere to University rules regarding online access and usage. See details below.
- NOTE: Individual instructors may have additional requests regarding classroom behavior. Please adhere to those as well.
In addition to the above conduct guidelines, students are expected to do original work for all course assignments, including exams. Students are responsible for their own conduct and all cases of dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, cheating) will be reported to the proper university officials. Students are expected to adhere to CBA and University policies regarding Academic Integrity.
Acceptable Use of CSULB Electronic Systems & Services
Electronic communications systems and services are essential to conducting University business. The University encourages the use of electronic communications systems and services for lawful purposes and makes them widely available to the University community. To access and use these priviledge, users must conform to CSU and CSULB policies and standards, state law and federal law. Note that the University reserves the right to deny use of its electronic communications systems and services, when a user violates set standards.
Users are prohibited from utilizing University electronic communications systems and services for any unlawful, unethical or unprofessional purpose or activity. Examples of prohibited use include but are not limited to:
- Transmission of threats, harassment or defamation.
- Download or distribution of material or programs that could be deemed harmful to University electronic communications systems or services.
- Violations of any state of federal laws or any applicable CSU or CSULB policy or regulation, including but not limited to, Rules of the Academic Senate, the Faculty Code, the Faculty Handbook and Administrative Guidelines.
- Intentional access, viewing, download or dissemination of materials containing obscene matter.
- Violation of software licensing agreements.
- Intentional damage to equipment, software or data.
- Commercial activities unrelated to the mission of the University. This includes soliciting, promoting, selling, marketing or advertising products or services (e.g. consulting services) or other revenue generating private business operations for personal financial gain.
