Dean’s Spring 2011 Update

Get Ready: CBA Convocation on Friday, August 26

A reminder that summer will soon be over: the CBA Convocation will be held in the Daniel Recital Hall on Friday, August 26, from 10:45 am to 12:15 pm. Lunch will be served following the convocation from 12:15 to 1:30 pm.

This is our normal location, and our convocation follows President Alexander’s CSULB 2011 Annual Convocation in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center that runs from 9:00 to 10:30 am.

The program for the CBA Convocation will include introduction of new faculty, financial review, program and center updates, and other reports. The convocation will provide information about college achievements in 2010-2011 and about what lies ahead. An agenda will follow, but I am still working on the program.

Mark Your Calendars: All Faculty are Invited to College and MBA Update on Friday, September 16

There are always many things to cover at the CBA Convocation, and part of the reason to convene is to have a nice lunch together, reconnect with each other, and get a start on the new academic year.

Rather than rush through all the information items on August 26, we have reserved the Pyramid Annex on Friday, September 16, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm (with a continental breakfast at 8:30 am) to complete the college updates and announcements.

In addition, we are approaching the final stages of the MBA Revitalization process; the final step will be voting by the faculty. I have asked MBA Director David Horne to prepare detailed information for the faculty to be discussed on September 16. More information will be provided as the time draws near.

AACSB Maintenance of Accreditation Application Submitted

During June, Mary Celsi and I worked on preparing the application for our next AACSB reaccreditation. It was due to AACSB on July 1, 2011 for a Peer Review Team visit in early 2014. I am pleased to announce that we submitted the application on June 30.

Mary did a great job in taking the lead on preparing the application, and Mary and I reviewed lots of information in selecting the peer and aspirant schools. View a copy of the application.

CBA Faculty Attend SAP Workshops

Thanks to a grant from Boeing Corporation, the CBA will be able to license SAP Enterprise Resource Management software. The plans are to use SAP modules in Supply Chain Management and Information Systems courses, and this implementation will be worked out over the coming academic year. The chairs and faculty from the IS and Management/HRM departments have been discussing the usage of SAP software for the last several months.

Sophie Lee, Michael Chung, and new hire Ming Chen attended workshops on learning how to use the software sponsored by SAP University Alliances, of which we are now a member. Sophie took the training in Milwaukee while Michael and Ming took it in Chico. Thanks again to Boeing for providing the funding that makes this possible.

Work Continues on the CBA Advising Center

Progress is being made on the renovation and the Advising Center should re-open by the time classes begin in the fall semester.

As noted in the May Dean’s Update, we are using restoration funds to refresh and revamp the Advising Center. The University decided to hold back the great bulk of the stimulus funds as a cushion against the large budget cuts we are facing in 2011-2012 and since the stimulus funds we were allocated are one-time, non-recurring funds, spending them on upgrading the Advising Center was approved by Academic Affairs. Student advising is an important aspect of the University’s Highly Valued Degree Initiative, and student advising will be key to our efforts to increase graduation rates for all of our students, particularly our underrepresented minority students.

As you can see from the drawing below, the revamped Advising Center will have doors replacing the service windows, and a more open, more inviting design throughout. There is a reception area, Director’s office, and stations for five advisors. With the physical refresh, the Advising Center is positioned to serve our students better than ever.

Business Leadership Academy Kicks Off Due to Generosity of Donor

The Business Leadership Academy launched its Business & Nonprofit Development in Ethnic Communities pilot program during 2011 Summer Session III thanks to the financial contribution provided by donor Damon Dunn, a Stanford Graduate, former NFL running back, and successful social entrepreneur.  Mr. Dunn’s generous donation provided funding for the participation of five students and an offering of two courses – Marketing 300 and Economics 300.  On the first day of class, we held a luncheon at the Chartroom for the participating students, faculty and administrators at which time Mr. Dunn was introduced and gave his inspiring personal story of triumph.

For the past year, the College of Business Administration and the College of Liberal Arts have been engaged in a collaboration to develop a program for non-traditional business students interested in an academic program designed to mesh culture with business practices in order to develop business professionals prepared to address the multiplicities of managing business and nonprofit organizations in under-served, economically challenged, and ethnic communities. 

Working at the crossroads of business, nonprofit, and government, students will blend business models and cultural principles to engage in innovative, sustainable, and scalable mission-driven public and private business ventures to bring about economic empowerment and positive social change.

Students in the program will earn a minor in business administration and ethnic studies courses. The minor includes business courses with a community-based approach in economic development, marketing, management, accounting, and entrepreneurship.  Also included are service learning experiences, topic specific seminars and networking opportunities that will help students become informed of the influence of the multicultural dynamics in businesses and the ethnic communities they will serve. 

SCPD Set to Initiate Passport to Success

Among the positive new things that will be happening in the coming academic year is the Passport to Success, the newly designed professional development program offered by the Student Center for Professional Development (SCPD). Championed by SCPD Director Howard Fletcher and developed by the SCPD Advisory Board, the Passport will add a valuable dimension to student success by preparing them for the business world.

The Passport (yes, it a document that will get stamped) is a series of progressive learning experiences encompassing workshops, events, community service activities and our highly successful Corporate Mentoring Program. In today's job market, a diploma might get the student an interview but it will not get the student the job. Student need to differentiate themselves with non-academic skills and attributes that employers value the most. Passport activities provide these skills and attributes and truly adds value to our student's diploma.

While I want you to know about the Passport to Success, I also am asking for your help in letting students know about SCPD and the Passport. Howard might be contacting you about making a short presentation about the programs at the beginning of your class, and I hope that you will give him a few minutes of your class time. If you want to get more involved in SCPD activities, I am sure Howard can find a way for you to connect.

UCEL and Long Beach Chamber Host Leading the Ethical Organization Event with Ken Blanchard as Keynote Speaker

Over 400 people attended the Leading the Ethical Organization event on June 28 at the Long Beach Hyatt. The Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership and the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce co-sponsored the event. Ken Blanchard, a global leader in workplace learning, leadership, employee productivity and team effectiveness, was the keynote speaker. The event also included a panel on ethics that included Congressman Dan Lungren, local businesswoman Cindy Allen, and Justin Paperny, who spent time in jail for ethics violations.

The following is from the press release issued after the event by the UCEL:

Ken Blanchard, chief spiritual officer of The Ken Blanchard Companies, has co-authored some of the best-selling business leadership books of our time, including “The One-Minute Manager.”

The Ukleja Center for Ethical Leadership at California State University Long Beach (CSULB) presented its 2011 John Wooden Ethics in Leadership Award to Ken Blanchard.  Accompanied by a $10,000 check to Blanchard’s philanthropic organization, the award was presented by Louise Ukleja, co-founder of the Ukleja Center, and Michael Solt, center director and dean of the College of Business Administration at CSULB. 

“Ken Blanchard epitomizes the spirit of the John Wooden Award,” said Ukleja.  “Like Coach Wooden, he has chosen to lead a purposeful life guided by the principles of love, faith and integrity and has answered a calling to become a teacher, coach and author.” 

John Wooden, who passed away at the age of 99 in 2010, received the inaugural John Wooden Ethics in Leadership Award in 2009.  Coach Wooden is best known for his ability to instill confidence and transmit the values of his “Pyramid of Success” to the on-court behavior of his players.

The award is named for Wooden to promote his practice of ethical leadership and to salute a leader who embodied the Ukleja Center’s core values of integrity, excellence, empowerment and servant leadership.  It is designed to honor a person or organization whose contribution is built on ethical behavior and visionary leadership and reflects a significant response to a specific challenge or opportunity. 

Innovation Challenge for 2011-2012: We Need Volunteers

Forouzan Golshani, Dean of the College of Engineering, and I already gearing up for the 2011-2012 Innovation Challenge and plan on getting the word out to students early in the fall semester.

Jun Yan and Debbie McElroy are serving on the steering committee for the Innovation Challenge, and other CBA faculty members served as mentors to student teams last year, but I am asking that you consider getting involved this year. If you would like to be a mentor, or if you know of someone who might, please let me know. Entrepreneurs, investors, corporate managers, etc., can all provide assistance as mentors to student teams. We are also looking for sponsors who can provide funds for seed funding or consulting services. We have accounting, legal, and business consulting services lined up so far, but I would like to find marketing consultants to add to the list.

The following is from the press release from the recent Innovation Challenge event:

An electric motocross bike unique to the United States and developed by a team of students at Cal State Long Beach (CSULB) has won the campus' 2011 Innovation Challenge, which comes with $10,000 for seed funding to further develop the product and help the students get their business started.

Sponsored by the university's College of Engineering and College of Business Administration, the Innovation Challenge gives CSULB students an opportunity to put their entrepreneurial spirit in action.  Competing against innovative ideas from more than a dozen teams with totaling 80 students, the winners created the Electric Motocross Bicycle (EMXB), a high-performance electric mountain bike. The EMXB is a hybrid between a mountain bike and a dirt bike -- lightweight, nimble and practical like a mountain bike, while having power to go up the hills and heavy-duty suspension to go fast over any terrain like a dirt bike.  The unique design takes after a motocross style dirt bike with its relatively comfortable seat and seating position and aggressive, functional styling.

Student participants submitted their business plans in February, and the four team finalists were chosen in March. The finalists then continued to develop their products and business plans in preparation for a presentation to the judging committee, made up of real-world investors and entrepreneurs representing various industries. 

What makes the challenge more interesting and practical is the partnership between the College of Engineering and College of Business Administration. In most cases engineering students focused on the creation and design of the product while teammates who are business students focused on the financing and marketing of the product.

Information sessions on various topics including legal issues regarding patents have been held to help prepare students interested in participating.  As part of the learning process, those teams not selected have the opportunity to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their plans and hear suggestions for possible next steps. In addition to the other benefits, organizers say that it is a great opportunity for students to develop business, leadership and analytical skills and make connections with others who have similar interests.

Among companies and company representatives involved in the Innovation Challenge are Bager Electronics, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Boeing Defense Space and Security.  Other sponsors include The Curran Family, the Dean’s Advisory Council of the College of Engineering, the CSULB Provost’s Office, Bager of Southern California, Lerder and Associates Investment Council, and the Schulten Group.
