MBA Team Competes in CFA Institute Research Challenge

On February 24, a team of CBA MBAs competed in the Annual CFA Institute Research Challenge hosted locally for the second year by the CFA Societies of Los Angeles and Orange County. The MBA team, featured in the picture below, consisted of Volkan Golpinar, Ngoc Cao, Matthew Moseley, Daren Lou, and Alex Willson. The picture also features Finance Chair and Professor Steven Le and CFA Mentor Cathy Lloyd, who works for a portfolio management firm in Los Angeles.

This year's subject company was j2 Global (JCOM). On February 24, teams of graduate and undergraduate students presented their analysis of j2 Global to a panel of judges and industry professionals. The presentations were held at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach. The final research reports and presentations were first evaluated locally with the winning team advancing to the Americas Regional Final in New York City in April. The winning team this year was from the University of Southern California.

The CFA Institute Research Challenge offers students the unique opportunity to learn from leading industry experts and compete with peers from the world's top finance programs. This annual educational initiative promotes best practices in equity research among the next generation of analysts through hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company analysis and presentation skills.

This year's local teams came from the following schools: California State University, Fullerton; California State University, Long Beach; Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo; Chapman University; Claremont McKenna College; Loyola Marymount University; Pepperdine University; University of California, Irvine; University of California, Los Angeles; and University of Southern California.
