“Sing like no one's listening, love like you've never been hurt, dance like nobody's watching, and live like its heaven on earth.” –Mark Twain
Name: Corey Marc Montanez
Hometown: Pacific Grove, CA
My name is Corey Montanez and this is my Beach Experience...
My Beach Experience has always been to take advantage of every opportunity that is presented to me while attending CSULB. The last four years at CSULB have been amazing! I would have never predicted the places I would go and the people I would meet. I owe all my successes over the last four years to The Beach.
What was your experience like getting to CSULB and making the transition to the university?
CSULB had always been my first choice since day one. Growing up in a small town on the Central Coast, I wanted a complete change of scenery and was in search of the ultimate college experience. While visiting the campus with my family one spring, I knew immediately that I would fit in perfectly to the CSULB culture. The flowers were blooming; the diversity was unlike anything I had ever experienced; the weather was perfect; and knowing that the beach was just down the street was a huge plus! After my first visit, I knew that the campus and every unique aspect of the university would be a perfect home for me for the next four years. The transition, just like for any college student, was a tough experience. Being far away from my family and old friends was difficult at first. However, after settling in and meeting the right people, the transition became much easier. Never once have I regretted my decision to attend CSULB and I could not imagine attending any other university.
What are some of the opportunities CSULB has given you or that led you to come to CSULB?
Knowing that college is supposed to be the best four years of your life, I knew that I had to take advantage of every opportunity that was presented to me. Although getting involved in clubs and organizations on campus did not necessarily help my GPA, there is no way that I could put a price on the experiences that I have encountered over the past four years as a result of my membership. My involvement with the Learning Alliance has provided all kinds of opportunities that have impacted my learning experiences both in and out of the classroom. The staff in the Learning Alliance encouraged me from day one to get involved on campus…so I did just that! Since then, I have performed multiple hours of community service; became a founding father of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity; grew to be a passionate member of the Monson Maniacs; and traveled to Australia! Also, my experiences here at The Beach have given me the opportunity to establish life-long friendships that I will cherish always. My experience would not have been complete if it wasn’t for the people and friends that surround me everyday. More importantly, CSULB has given me the opportunity to graduate with a degree in History and a minor in Recreation and Leisure Studies. I am fully satisfied with my efforts to be involved with everything that CSULB has to offer.
What are your plans after graduation?
First of all, I cannot believe I am about to graduate from college! At a young age, I never really envisioned myself attending a university. However, thanks to the support of my family, they have made all of the opportunities and experiences at CSULB possible for me. I thank my mom and dad for everything they have provided for me both before and during my college experience here at The Beach. After graduation, it is my plan to continue taking advantage of all the opportunities that life has to offer. I would like to keep traveling around the world and experience different cultures from different countries. After traveling, hopefully my degree in History will allow me to settle down and find a career that serves as a best fit. I also intend to stay connected with the university as much as possible. Joining the Alumni Association will help me stay connected with CSULB and provide the opportunities to give back to my university. No matter what happens after graduation, I know that the challenges, experiences, and education from CSULB will help me get through anything life has to offer.
Congrats to all the graduates of 2009! Good luck to everyone in the future and GO BEACH!
