My Beach Experience:

My name is Alison Yoho. I am majoring in Geography with a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and this is myBeach Experience:

I was a civil engineering major for 3 years with a geography minor. I realized I wanted to work in GIS so I decided to to switch to geography and emphasize in GIS. When I switched my major, I had a lot more time on my hands, so I decided to find a sport that I could be involved in. I found Ultimate Frisbee and it has changed my life. I have great friends through Ultimate and it keeps me in shape. .

My Path to CSULB:

When looking at colleges, I didn't know what I wanted to major in but I was leaning towards either geography, mathematics, or civil engineering, so i wanted to find schools that had all 3. I ended up applying for Cal Poly Pomona and CSULB in the civil engineering programs. I got into both but ultimately chose CSULB because it was closer to home and it was a family school because both my parents and my brother came here.

Seizing Opportunities:

Wanting to work in GIS, I applied to the NSF-REU Geospatial Research and Mapping and was accepted as one of 13 out of over 100 applicants. This was an amazing experience and a once in a lifetime opportunity. Along with this opportunity, I have been working with the Redhill Group, Inc. as an Intern mapping public uses of the transit systems in the Bay Area.

My Beach and Beyond:

I am very interested in GIS, specifically remote sensing, and would like to work in the government. Specifically, I would like to work for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) in Washington D.C. along side with my brother.

Favorite Class: Geog 495 Field Training in Geospatial Techniques - I was lucky enough to get to participate in the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU) Geospatial Research and Mapping which took place at CSULB and on the Island of Kauai, Hawaii during the Summer 2012. I did field research in Kauai for 2 weeks with 12 other students working on different projects including remote sensing, hydrology, archeology, and GIS.

Favorite Professor: Dr. Christopher Lee, Geography

Favorite Spot on Campus: My favorite spot on campus is probably in the central quad area in upper campus. Its a nice place to relax, talk to friends, eat lunch and throw a frisbee around.

Activities and Organizations: When I was a civil engineering student, I was involved in the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) for 3 years including being the treasurer and vice president of the club. Now, I have been involved with the Geography Student Association (GSA) and the Ultimate Frisbee Club for the past 2 years.
