California State University, Long Beach 60th Anniversary



1949-1959 Years

The little college in the apartment building takes off in the fabulous '50s, leading the way to Long Beach State's Golden Decade.


1960-1969 Years

The groovy '60s found that peace and politics didn't always harmonize. California's Master Plan for Higher Education becomes a reality, enabling Cal State Long Beach to join the new California State College system.


1970-1979 Years

Cal State Long Beach earns university status and a new student union beckons students to relax and have fun. Disco, anyone?


1980-1989 Years

It's a decade of stars as CSULB gets into the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic spirit, the Banjo and Fiddle Festivals and Blues Festivals draw name performers and actor and alumnus Steve Martin receives an honorary doctorate.


1990-1999 Years

Growth is the byword as new buildings open. The President's Scholars Program begins, bringing many of California's top high school students to CSULB.


2000-2009 Years

A new century begins and The Beach is hotter than ever. Cal State Long Beach becomes the largest campus in the CSU System and one of the nation's premier comprehensive universities.
