President's Letter to the Campus Community
Dear CSULB Faculty and Staff:
Today not only marks the beginning of October and our second full month of the academic year, but it also marks the 90th day of operation into our fiscal year without a state budget. Despite this unprecedented reality we remain cautiously optimistic that we will not only get a state budget relatively soon but will get a budget that will restore some of the funds cut from our campus last year. The combination of acquiring some restored state funding and a final round of federal economic stimulus funding has placed us in a better position this fall than we were last year at this time. Therefore, for the first time in three years we are once again accepting transfer student applications for the month of January with the potential of enrolling more students for the next semester. This can help ease some of the building pressure for thousands of our transfer students throughout California. If a state budget is passed and it includes the Governor's recommended $305 million in restored funding to the CSU and another $60 million for enrollment growth, our campus could be in a position to accept another 1,500 students within the next year.
Additionally, I am pleased to report that Governor Schwarzenegger signed three important bills into law including the community college transfer bill and two bills that allow the CSU to provide doctoral degrees in nursing and physical therapy. The passage of each of these bills will help our campus and the CSU better address the expanding educational needs of all Californians. The student transfer legislation will make it easier for students to navigate the complex educational pathways from the time they enter their respective community college through completing their baccalaureate degree at a CSU institution. The passage of the two doctoral degree bills will help CSU campuses provide much needed advanced degrees in nursing and physical therapy.
I also would like to bring to your attention our new "CSULB Diversity Plan" for faculty and staff hiring. This plan was put together with the assistance of numerous faculty and staff and describes many new and innovative ways that our campus can attract and retain top quality candidates from under-represented backgrounds. As campus search committees are initiated, we ask that you please familiarize yourself with and use this plan as you move forward.
I will keep you updated as new information is made available regarding our state budgetary circumstances.
