Dr. Kevin Malotte was recently nominated for the Charles C. Shepard Science Award. Since 1985, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) have presented the Charles C. Shepard Science Award to authors of the most outstanding peer-reviewed research papers published by CDC/ATSDR scientists during the preceding year. The award recognizes scientific achievement at CDC/ATSDR and honors the memory of Dr. Charles C. Shepard, whose career was marked by the pursuit of scientific excellence. The paper on which Dr. Malotte was a co-author is entitled, “Antiretroviral Preexposure Prophylaxis for Heterosexual HIV Transmission in Botswana.” It appeared in the New England Journal of Medicine in July, 2012. Tanja Popovic, Deputy Associate Director for Science at the CDC, noted that “Nomination for the Shepard Award is, in itself, an honor and nominated scientists will be recognized for their special contribution to the mission of CDC/ATSDR and to public health.” The winners of the award will be announced at a ceremony and reception at the CDC in Atlanta in January 2014. This is the third paper that Dr. Malotte has co-authored that has been nominated for this award in the past 15 years. He received the award in 1999.
