CHER to Work with Building Healthy Communities Long Beach (BHCLB)

Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach (BHCLB) is committed to building a community where: health care and prevention resources are available for all children, school attendance increases, the childhood obesity epidemic is reversed, and youth violence is reduced.

In early 2009, areas of central and west Long Beach were selected as one of 14 communities to become a part of The California Endowment’s (TCE) 10-year Building Healthy Communities (BHC) Initiative. Long Beach agencies, community members, youth, faith leaders and systems leaders participated in a year-long planning process. The work consisted of over 50 community meetings and resulted in the creation of a Community Action Plan to create sustainable health improvements among Long Beach residents. In 2011, CHER was awarded a grant by TCE to develop and oversee evaluation and learning activities for BHCLB and to administer cross-site evaluation and learning initiatives with oversight by TCE and collaboration from all of the BHC sites.
